Coronavirus: are we winning?

With China reporting less numbers, medication confusion and the world on lock-down, is humanity actually going to be ok?

Recently, CNN finally admitted China might have lied about the number of Coronavirus cases and deaths they have been reporting. This can be seen as good and bad.

What could possibly be good about this?

It is clear China has been lying about their numbers and it puts Democrats in a tough spot. Naturally, Democrats have started attacking Republicans for other reasons, most notably Hydrochloroquine. However this could be a huge win for Republicans come election time.

Why it's bad.

The world is not getting better. The number of cases and deaths keep climbing every day. France recently reported close to 1,000 deaths from respiratory illnesses in retirement communities, and this number is not unique compared to other countries.

The U.S. also recently surpassed Italy and took the spot for the most reported cases in the world. However, it is important to remember the relative sizes in population between the U.S. and other countries. For instance, the United States has a population of roughly 330 million according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and has 311,357 confirmed cases, which is roughly 0.09% of the U.S. population. While Italy on the other hand has a population of 60,482,611 according to worldometer.info, and 124,632 confirmed cases, 0.21% of their population. I have also read that the world has finally broken 1,000,000 confirmed cases or 0.13% of the world population.

While the numbers are still relatively low, what is with the self-isolation, quarantine and panic?

We do not have a cure yet. This disease is spreading rapidly and right now we have almost nothing to help. Almost nothing. Scientist have discovered Hydrochloroquine, a Malaria drug, helps patients recover faster and easier. However Democrats have been fighting against this drug after an elderly couple from Arizona ate aquarium cleaner that had Chloroquine in it. I honestly believe the only reason Democrats are against this drug is because Trump has been talking about it, giving him another political win if he is right about its use. Scientist are also working on a vaccine and are waiting on additional tests and clearances from the FDA before rolling them out.

Why are we still on house arrest?

This actually helps limit the number of possible cases, for now. I fear, as we come out of isolation in the future, the number of cases will surge again until everyone has taken the medication/vaccines for COVID-19.

Along with a crippling economy, mass unemployment and the fear of martial law, there is a lot more than just COVID-19 we as a country and world need to recover from. In the meantime, I hope all of you are safe and healthy. If you are feeling sick, please call your doctor.
